Best Season to Visit the Grand Canyon

When planning a visit to the Grand Canyon, you have to keep the weather in mind. While the magnetic appeal of this attraction remains stable year-round, some seasons are better for enjoying the scenery than others.

At Buck Wild Hummer Tours, we are ready to show you this world-famous national park from January to December. However, before you pack your bags and book our tour, let’s take a closer look at Grand Canyon weather during each season.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Grand Canyon?

Spring and fall are the best time to visit Arizona and enjoy the most comfortable weather at Grand Canyon.

March-May in the Grand Canyon

In the spring, the weather in Grand Canyon, AZ, is generally mild and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 50⁰F to 80⁰F.  The warm weather allows you to explore the national park comfortably during the day. For roughly 6 weeks from March through April, the Spring Break season drives crowds to the canyon that are often larger than the summer crowds.

While flowers blossom in the Grand Canyon for a significant part of the year, May is the peak of the blooming season. If you come in May, you’ll see tulips, daffodils, lilacs, and peonies in full bloom.

Keep in mind that spring can also bring unpredictable weather, including occasional rain showers or even snowfall at higher elevations. During this season, Buck Wild’s hummers offer you open-air rides so you can keep cool in the shade and feel the breeze. Meanwhile, night temperatures are still too low for comfortable overnight camping.

September – November in the Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon weather in the fall is just as comfortable and mild as in the spring. While days are getting shorter (making catching the sunset easier), the temperatures are still between 50 ⁰F and 70 ⁰F.

During this season, the foliage surrounding the canyon transforms into a stunning display of vibrant autumn colors, creating a picturesque backdrop for exploration and photography.  Meanwhile, crowds tend to thin out compared to the busy summer months. This allows you to enjoy a tranquil and immersive experience. You also get to view wildlife, which becomes active in preparation for the winter season.

Similar to spring weather, fall weather can be unpredictable, so pack a raincoat and a pair of waterproof boots.

Peak Season: June – August in the Grand Canyon

During the summer break, the national park becomes crowded. Predictable weather and warm summer nights attract tourists from all over the world. You can explore the national park during the dark hours, sleep under the stars, and even see one of the 22 bat species flying around.

It’s an excellent time for various outdoor activities, including hiking, horseback riding, and biking. You’ll also see wildflowers in bloom and take advantage of various tourist services. Not to mention, the Grand Canyon is famous for its birding year-round. Yet another reason to bring your binoculars!

The downsides of this season are significant crowds and high temperatures. Inside the canyon, they reach 120 ⁰F.

Calm Season: December – February in the Grand Canyon

Winter may not be the best time to visit Arizona, but it’s definitely the calmest time at the Grand Canyon National Park. The major benefits of this season are the lack of crowds and the opportunity to see the snow-covered canyon. While the wildlife is usually less active in the winter, you can still get a peek at elk, mule deer, ravens, and rock squirrels.

If you plan to go camping in the winter, you need special gear. Temperatures range between 40⁰F and 50⁰F during the day and 15⁰F and 20⁰F during the night. Buck Wild still has you covered in this season with enclosed, heated hummers and blankets to keep you comfortable while enjoying the sights.
